Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook: Culver City’s Stairway to the Sky
One of the hidden gems that makes Culver City such a special place to live is the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook — or as many locals simply call it, “The Stairs.”
Depending on where you live in Culver City, you can walk, bike, or drive over to the trailhead. From there, it’s a climb up a winding path or the now-famous staircase that challenges your legs and rewards you with one of the best views in Los Angeles. On a clear day, you can see all the way from the Pacific Ocean to Downtown LA — and sometimes even the Hollywood sign peeking through the hills.
Why locals love the Overlook:
It’s our very own “little hill in the city.”
You’ll spot familiar faces — joggers, dog walkers, families, and fitness regulars all making their way up.
It’s a social spot: many people meet a friend here to catch up while getting their cardio in.
Where else can you do a mini hike, then walk right back down into the city for a cup of coffee?
And if you’re in the mood for a longer adventure, the Overlook connects directly into Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, where you can extend your walk into miles of trails, scenic ridges, and hidden nature nooks.
Wildlife surprise: Along the way, keep your eyes open — you might spot bunnies darting across the path, lizards sunbathing on the rocks, or hawks soaring overhead. It’s a reminder that in Culver City, nature is always closer than you think.
History of the Overlook:
The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is a State Park, opened in 2009 on land once considered for development. Instead, it was preserved as open space for the community. The park is 58 acres and includes native habitat restoration, a visitor center with exhibits about the area’s history and ecology, and plenty of picnic spots to enjoy after your climb.
Whether you’re looking for a tough workout, a peaceful place to watch the sunset, or just a quick escape from city life, the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook is Culver City’s built-in retreat. It’s one of those places that makes you think, wow, I really get the best of both worlds living here.
